OK. You can't really see it here, but there is a black cat there. I took a hike to a spectacular overlook. Well, it would have been a spectacular overlook and wholly worth the one hour hike each way through a light, steady rain -- the first in a month -- if there were any water actually spilling over the 200-foot drop. Been dry here.
But I digress. ...as I drove home on the twisting mountain road I passed what looked for all the world like an unmoving cat whose head had been stuffed into a Campbell's soup can. I went a bit passed this sight and decided to turn around and check it out.
I swear this is true just as forcefully as I berate myself for not photographing it.
I drove past the cat again, stopped and got out to see what it really was. It looked for all the world like roadkill with flies all over it, not moving other than a little movement of its side as it breathed.
I crept up quietly, a little worried that it might be rabid or maybe something besides a cat -- like a skunk. But it was exactly as I described: a black cat, unmoving on the side of the road w/ its head stuck inside a soup can.
I reached down and grabbed the can and gently twisted it a little and tried to work it off the cat's head. The cat didn't move other than to try to resist the force of the can being pulled off. After gently working this way and that, I saw the ears emerge and finally the can came off.
The cat seemed dazed. It blinked and shook its head and then looked up at me with its two big green eyes. I looked in the can and there were maggots in it. The cat looked up at me for a second and then took off running up the road.
I got back in the car and spied it a hundred yards or so up the road walking into the woods. I got a couple blurry shots of it, but that was it.
Don't know if the cat will survive or not, but at least it has a shot at it. I can't say how long it had been stuck like that, but it was pretty hot and the kitty's head was wet when it emerged from the can.
Well, good luck, little kitty. May all your tuna dreams come true.

i had to laugh when i read this blog- your eye is very sharp indeed.......i'm sending this link to my daughter who is a freshman at virginia tech this year. just before i drove her out that way last week i called her in to the living room to see what our 'slow bus' cat had gotten herself into- she had found an empty single-serving bag of cheetos left on the coffee table and had inserted her head in to sample it's orange deliciousness. unfortunately it got stuck on her head and i became aware of her predicament by the eerie stillness that overcame her. poor silly cat- just before we took the bag off i could see her breaths beginning to contract and expand the bag- i hate to think what would have happened to her had we not been at home.
also- i had almost forgotten the beauty of the western part of the state until we drove out that way toward blacksburg.....across 58 and then a northern turn that went by smith mountain lake, roanoke nestled against the mountains, a sunset over blacksburg that you just can't see here in ghent....i was so tempted to stop by a realtor while i was there.
sorry if i sent my post numerous times....not sure if it went through or if you have comments disabled and they have to be approved.....
Oh my god!! HOrrible for the kitty.
