Timing, Fate and Irony

My friend, the Counselor, is building a new house. Her friend, an architect, has been working on the design and production of it for several months now. They have become very close as a result of the steady exchange of ideas, designs, desires and brainstorms. As with many projects, a deadline looms. But this isn't a race to get the occupancy permit approved, or the electrical turned on or the window blinds hung. Her friend has terminal cancer and has just a handful of weeks to live. It is going to be close, but it looks like she will be able to show her the finished product in time.

We create and plan our lives with certain goals in mind; our attempts to manifest our dreams. And often we are left with something less than we imagined. I hope the Counselor and her friend can share the joy of the completion of their joint project and that they both know that their creation will outlast each of them. It will be a monument to their shared vision of a living space in which to enjoy the company of friends and family for a long time. And then that experience will pass to someone else when it is time.

As usual, it might not be the future they had imagined, but it will be one that will be all the more special by their united vision.

Peace be with you, Elizabeth.
